Mike Fraher from Panther Environmental Solutions Ltd recently delivered an Effluent Treatment Plant Training Course for Northern Ireland Environmental Agency (NIEA). There was a good mix of NIEA inspectors and industry at the course. It was very well received with attendees having left with a much clearer understanding of how a waste water treatment plant should work, how to treat effluent to a consistently good standard and how to sort out operational problems that invariably occur from time to time. Mike has a considerable wealth of practical and regulatory experience from over 20 years working in the industry across sites regulated both in the UK and ROI that he brings to bear during the course with a good set of notes to take away for reference afterwards. The course has been refreshed since I last attended nearly 5 years ago and has been updated with new techniques. New innovations included better aeration equipment, odour control, minimising noise emissions and monitoring of influent or final discharge. Plant design was more holistic covering running/capital costs, energy efficiency, odour and noise control in addition to compliance with discharge limits for a range of pollutants. I really enjoyed the course and would be happy to recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their knowledge of operating or regulating an Effluent Treatment Plant.
